Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in East Rochester, Ohio. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol test, look no further than Accredited Drug Testing, the experts in hair testing. Our centers span every city across the nation, ready to conduct your hair test. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

In the past few years, drug testing methods increasingly favor the hair follicle test. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation participants consistently employ hair follicle testing. Its key benefit is a longer drug detection window, typically up to 90 days, gathered during a supervised process, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent use within five days, urine tests still reign as the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a detailed record of alcohol and drugs by incorporating biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers up to an approximately 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hairs (about the same as a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, integrating a sample into the lab's system. This step checks if the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary review for drugs of abuse. While it is economical for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Any sample indicating a potential positive outcome in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows likely positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Drugs are retrieved from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples suggesting positivity undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is vetted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests offer up to a 90-day detection window, unlike urine tests with a shorter period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage history: Offers a timeline of drug use over months, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs need about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally costs more than other testing methods.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences may impact the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", they analyze the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

In East Rochester, OH, hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over standard urine tests. Not only does it provide a longer detection window, but the reliability and accuracy of results are noteworthy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
