In East Springfield, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area with centers across the Nation that conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body suffices for most analyses. Hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG and offer tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly encompass hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now opt for hair tests over typical urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The main advantage is a prolonged detection period of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and challenging to falsify. However, for drug use detection within the initial 5 days, urine testing remains most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When taken closely from the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This task entails confirming that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any further data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick check for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be acceptable in court. All samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require a secondary verification.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is the most demanding methodology to carry out.

Validation of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is very challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical data: It can illustrate a drug usage pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot spot recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair typically after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in East Springfield, OH, it's evident that hair testing offers enhanced detection accuracy. With its ability to identify substances over extended periods, hair testing is not only more comprehensive but also more reliable than urine testing, which serves as a significant advantage.

Superior to urine analyses in many aspects, hair tests in East Springfield ensure better detection rates, instilling confidence among employers and institutions that rely on stringent testing methods for maintaining a drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

In East Springfield, OH, the lengthy detection window of hair follicle testing is particularly beneficial. Capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, it offers employers a more complete understanding of an individual’s recent substance use history, aiding in informed decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
