Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing in the Elizabethtown region of Ohio. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, with testing locations throughout all major cities in the U.S. Hair lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches are generally needed from the head or body for the test, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized purposes.

Recently, the preferred method for drug testing has increasingly become the hair follicle test. This method is favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals who often choose it over traditional urine analysis. Zero-tolerance policies, court mandates, and probation requirements have all incorporated hair tests due to their extensive detection window, lasting up to 90 days. While highly reliable, the urine test remains effective for identifying drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by holding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month history of substance use. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we imply scalp hair alone. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into a lab’s system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing data not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screening result requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need additional confirmation.

If Screening shows a presumptively positive result, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair in significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests provide a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical record: It offers a pattern of substance use over time, not just contemporary use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier compared to alternate testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing is preferred over urine testing in Elizabethtown, OH, due to its superior advantages. Unlike urine tests, hair analyses offer a broader detection window and are less susceptible to manipulation. Its accuracy makes it ideal for employer policies where reliability in detecting drug use is crucial. This method sets new standards for drug testing effectiveness.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Elizabethtown, OH, provides significant insight, covering up to 90 days of substance use history. Employers gain a comprehensive view of an individual's drug habits, informing better hiring decisions with more extensive data than what's typically available from shorter-term tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Elizabethtown, OH, hair follicle testing offers a tamper-resistant analysis method. As the risk of adulteration is significantly reduced, the integrity of the sample remains intact, ensuring credible and trustworthy results. This method stands out for its robustness and is less prone to manipulation than other testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
