Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Evendale, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair evaluations. We have facilities across all cities Nationwide that can conduct a hair test. Ideally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body, which is typically sufficient. Hair tests are analyzable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair assessments.

Recently, methods for drug testing have increasingly utilized hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed by employers with zero-tolerance drug use policies, courts, and those on probation. Key advantages include a significantly longer detection window for drugs, usually up to 90 days, conducted in an observed setting, and nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the prior 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lasting record of substance use by incorporating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for substances. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. When we mention head hair, it strictly refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step includes confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any further data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody apparatus.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Even though Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage in most cases, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples suggesting a positive result in Screening demand an additional confirmation.

Should a sample suggest a positive outcome during the Screening stage, more hair gets extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which accounts for why hair drug screening is the most complex method to perform.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suggesting a positive result undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The full laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug evaluations can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine evaluations which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug evaluation, thereby ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a trend of drug consumption over time, extending beyond just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
