Complete hair follicle drug screening is offered by Accredited Drug Testing in Forest Park, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our specialty lies in hair testing with centers available nationwide for your convenience. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair evaluations detect various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, and can be customized to fit specific requirements.

The inclusion of hair follicle drug tests has become prevalent in recent years. A variety of entities such as employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are shifting from traditional urine tests to hair drug screenings. Employers with strict no-drug use policies, along with courts and probationers, prefer hair follicle tests due to the extended detection capabilities they provide—offering a look back up to 90 days and ensuring an observed process that is resistant to tampering. However, when testing use within the immediate past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, providing a long-term record of substance use. When collected near the scalp, this method can offer up to a 3-month detection range for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands, roughly the width of a #2 pencil, collected closest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is ideal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair might be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes for drug test results consist of four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial handling phase where a sample is entered into a lab's system. This phase ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data that an electronic chain of custody system didn’t supply.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for drug presence. Although it is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening needs confirmation for court validation. All presumptive positive samples require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. At this stage, drug compounds are removed from hair in much lower concentrations than those found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a notably complex methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection period.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Patterns of drug use: It may reveal a timeline of substance use rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expenses involved: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than some other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing surpass urine testing in detecting drug use in Forest Park, OH? Hair testing provides superior accuracy, capable of uncovering traces of illicit substances that urine tests may miss.

A crucial advantage of hair testing is its longer detection window. While traditional urine tests capture recent drug use, hair tests offer a reliable detection period, making them the choice for situations requiring thorough substance use history evaluation.

Extended Detection Window

The strength of hair follicle testing in Forest Park, OH, is its extended detection window, which spans up to 90 days. This comprehensive timeframe grants employers a more detailed understanding of an individual's substance use history.

Such a lengthy detection period aids employers in making informed decisions, revealing usage patterns that would otherwise remain unnoticed by more short-sighted tests, reinforcing the value of hair follicle screenings.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Forest Park, OH, is a bastion against sample adulteration, ensuring tamper-resistant results critical for definitive results. Hair tests fight adulteration effectively than other testing methods.

Relentlessly reliable, these tests safeguard interpretation accuracy, preventing attempts to alter results, thereby offering trustworthy findings for legal and workplace compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
