Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Geneva, Ohio. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, look no further; Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this field, with testing sites nationwide, ready to administer the tests. Generally, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. This test can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various needs.

Lately, the preference for drug testing leans towards hair follicle testing over the typical urine test. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now often favor hair drug testing for its reliability. Hair tests are especially popular with employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, as well as within judicial and probation settings. The chief advantage is its extended detection range of up to 90 days, mitigating cheating risks, yet for recent drug use, urine tests remain unsurpassed.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. The hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, offering a long-term history of substance use. When collected close to the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch hair sample of around 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, or tests above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We recommend weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be taken. When referencing head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial processing of a sample into the lab’s system, including confirming the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary efficient check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the primary specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It can outline a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Aspects such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
