In Gerald, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. For those needing a hair alcohol or drug test, our centers nationwide offer specialized services. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body is needed. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other substances.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained popularity for drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer it over urine tests. This method fits zero-tolerance policies for drugs, probation, and legal monitoring. The main advantage is its 90-day detection window, strict oversight, and reliability. Yet, urine tests remain best for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term evidence of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand's growing fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can indicate up to a 3-month period of alcohol and drug exposure. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5-inch, approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels over 10, it is advisable to gather 150mg. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, a proportionate amount of body hair can be taken. Note that head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test encompasses four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where the sample is integrated into the lab's system. This involves checking the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any remaining data entry required beyond what an electronic chain of custody system supplies.

Screening is a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Screening serves as an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples; however, a positive result mandates confirmation for legal acceptability. Presumptive positives from Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than methods like urine or oral fluid tests, highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any samples indicating positive results are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory operations from Accessioning to Confirmation are assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adhere to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shortened timeline.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is considerably tough to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Shows a trend of drug consumption over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after an estimated 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair strand rather than the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
