Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Glenford, Ohio. For those requiring drug or alcohol evaluation via hair, we excel in this technique with locations across the nation ready to administer the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head hair is needed, but body hair is an alternative. Hair samples can be evaluated for substances, including alcohol/ETG, with tailored options available.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method over recent years. It's now commonly adopted by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts who opt for it over conventional urine tests. Zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probationary programs rely on its capability. The standout advantage is the extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, which is hard to manipulate. For recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means of identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair captures a long-term trace of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. By collecting hair close to the scalp, it's possible to attain around a 3-month detection window for identifying alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, less susceptible to tampering, and simple to transport.

Taking a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's best to measure the specimen with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be provided, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is concerned with the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory's system, ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry if an electronic chain of custody was not fully utilized.

Screening is a preliminary test to detect drug abuse. While screening is a cost-effective approach to discount drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples that are presumed positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears positive initially in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower level than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging to execute.

Any positive Screening result is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Highly secure: Cheating a hair drug test is incredibly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Provides a timeline of drug use patterns over an extended duration, as opposed to recent activity alone.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs take about 5-7 days before they become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: Despite being referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
