Based in Glenmoor, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing expertly offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in both drug and alcohol hair analysis, we operate nationwide facilities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Our tests provide results for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other hair testing needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular for drug screening. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts prefer them over urine tests for their extended detection window. Employers with strict policies, judicial authorities, and probation programs leverage these tests due to their up-to-90-day detection scope and difficult-to-tamper nature, although urine tests remain preferred for recent drug use, within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly being regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates extended-term data of alcohol and different drugs by securing biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strands. When taken near the scalp, hair may offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and conveniently shippable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides a 100mg sample, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is recommended. If scalp hair isn’t obtainable, an equivalent portion of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair signify scalp hair alone, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing within a laboratory’s system. This involves confirming the sample's appropriate sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid assessment for drug abuse. Though cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to stand in court. Presumptive positive samples in Screening do necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lesser concentrations compared to methodologies like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug analysis the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing when needed prior to confirmation. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can recognize drug consumption up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which have briefer detection durations.
  • High resistance to falsification: Withstanding most tampering makes hair testing results notably more reliable.
  • Chronological information: Offers a drug use pattern over time, rather than merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair attributes like color and growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Referred to often as "hair follicle tests," the assessment is conducted on the hair strand, not the scalp's under-hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Glenmoor, OH, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests by offering a broader detection range and superior accuracy. While urine tests can only detect recent drug use, hair follicle tests can reveal substance consumption over months. This extends the reliability of drug screening, ensuring employers and legal systems have a clear view of individuals' drug histories.

  • Extended detection period
  • Lower chance of tampering
  • Highly reliable
These benefits demonstrate why choosing hair follicle testing is advantageous over traditional urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window provided by hair follicle testing in Glenmoor, OH, is a significant benefit for employers. Unlike other testing methods that only review recent substance use, hair analysis gives an extensive view into past 90 days. This broad insight helps assess an individual's long-term substance habits, aiding in informed decision-making.

For those looking to monitor long-term substance adherence, hair follicle tests are indispensable. Their ability to capture past behavior provides undeniable evidence of an individual's drug use over time, offering unparalleled assurance to organizations and professionals alike.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are a robust solution in Glenmoor, OH, against the risk of sample tampering. With their stringent collection process, these tests build a strong defense against adulteration, ensuring that results are trustworthy and examiners can depend on them. The physical nature of hair collection contributes to this reliability.

By leveraging hair sample testing, both employers and employees can rest assured knowing the results reflect true drug usage without the possibility of false positives due to cheating attempts. This inherent tamper-resistance bolsters the credibility of the entire drug-testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
