Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing in Grant, Ohio. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers in every city nationwide to administer hair tests. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body can typically be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods more often involve hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug use policies, courts, and probation cases. A key advantage is its extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain more precise for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a comprehensive record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When closely cut to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for substances. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches around 200 strands (akin to a #2 pencil's thickness) taken from the scalp represents 100mg, the optimal amount for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels surpassing ten, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. By "head hair," we specifically mean scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test outcomes encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This stage verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening provides an initial expedient inspection for substance abuse. Although screening is an economical approach to exclude drug consumption in the bulk of samples, a confirmed result is necessary for court acceptance. Samples indicated as potentially positive in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests potentially positive during Screening, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other procedures (like urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug screening being the most challenging procedure.

Positive screening confirmations are executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO/IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can recognize substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine evaluations which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Alteration of hair drug tests is notably tough, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Gives historical insights: It outlines drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically costlier than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," these evaluations analyze the hair strand itself and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
