Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug exams in Gratis, Ohio. When a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise is in hair assessments, with centers nationwide able to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is needed. This testing method can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other personalized options.

In recent times, the hair follicle drug test has increasingly become a preferred method for drug screenings. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction experts now opt for it over standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judges, and probationers often use hair follicle tests due to their extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days. This observed procedure is tough to manipulate, though urine tests are the best choice for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands retain biomarkers within their fibers, offering a prolonged history of alcohol and drug usage. When sourced near the scalp, hair can yield an approximate 3-month detection duration for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is somewhat challenging, and the transport is uncomplicated.

A sample length of 1.5-inch consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a collection of 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair is permissible. Note that head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary induction of a sample into the laboratory’s workflow. This procedure ensures the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, designates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any necessary additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an elementary assessment for illicit drugs. Although Screening is a low-cost approach to eliminate drug usage across the majority of samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmatory procedures for court acceptance. Samples indicated as presumptively positive in Screening require a supplementary validation.

For samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to ready it for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair but at much reduced concentrations compared to alternative techniques (e.g. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate procedure to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screenings is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample is cleaned as necessary before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory workflow is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification adhering to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Capable of identifying drug consumption up to 90 days, hair drug tests provide a more extended detection period than urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Due to the complexity of cheating a hair drug test, the resultant data is more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: Enables a comprehensive view of drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher expenses than other methods.
  • Variations in results: Influences such as hair color and personal distinctions in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand as opposed to the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing is superior to urine testing in Gratis, OH, for several reasons. Detection accuracy is a major benefit, with hair testing providing longer detection periods and high reliability. Unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection window, hair follicle tests offer a comprehensive review of substance use history, which is crucial for employers enforcing strict policies.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
