Accredited Drug Testing offers all-inclusive hair follicle drug assessments in Green, Ohio. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers present in cities across the country that can conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing needs.

Recently, utilizing a hair follicle drug test has become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer a hair drug test over a conventional urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation commonly resort to hair follicle drug tests due to their benefit of detecting drug use over an extended period of up to 90 days, conducted through an observed process, and being hard to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair samples provide a record of alcohol and drug consumption over time by storing biomarkers within the hair strands as they grow. When taken from a spot near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use patterns spanning up to a three-month period. Hair sample collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch strand of around 200 hairs (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the hair sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable weight of body hair can be collected. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair pertains to any other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug testing results in a lab involve four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s records system, ensuring that the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for the presence of abuse drugs. While screening is a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug use in most samples, positive screenings need further confirmation for acceptability in legal contexts. Any samples indicative of a positive result during Screening do require secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive outcome in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and set up for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from the hair at a lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug testing.

The confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation if required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Minimal chance of deception: It is very challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides usage trend information: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, unlike merely identifying recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests generally incur more expense compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When deciding between hair follicle and urine tests, hair testing provides notable advantages in Green, OH. Hair sample analysis stands out due to its superior accuracy over longer intervals. While urine tests are traditionally popular, hair tests identify drug use across a 90-day span, offering a more elaborate consumption profile. Such reliability makes it indispensable for organizations enforcing zero-tolerance policies.

The dependability of hair analysis arises from its resilience to potential tampering tactics. With stringent protocols in sample collection and evaluation, these tests safeguard against adulteration, enhancing the integrity of results. Meanwhile, the expansive detection window of hair tests surpasses the limited scope of urine analysis, proving advantageous in maintaining rigorous substance policies.

Extended Detection Window

The ability to track substance use for up to 90 days makes hair follicle tests in Green, OH a powerful tool for employers. This extended window offers a wider lens into an individual's recent drug history, which urine tests can't match. By utilizing hair analysis, employers gain a clearer understanding of an applicant or employee's substance habits, fostering safer workplace environments.

Employers seeking a comprehensive view into drug use trends benefit from the long detection period hair follicle tests offer. They capture a chronological record of consumption, unlike urine tests which only detect recent usage. This broader oversight aids in more strategic hiring and management decisions, pivotal for compliance with workplace drug policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Achieving tamper-resistant drug testing is critical, and in Green, OH, hair follicle analysis ensures unwavering reliability. Unlike urine samples, which are prone to substitution or dilution, hair is a stable medium less susceptible to manipulation. Implementing hair testing as a standard practice mitigates risks associated with test evasion tactics, guaranteeing honesty in results.

The secure nature of hair testing arises from its inherent composition and elaborate analysis process. Hair samples resist contamination and alterations, providing genuine insights into consumption over months. This tamper-proof assurance heightens the credibility of test outcomes, invaluable for stakeholders requiring incontrovertible documentation of drug use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
