Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Hamden, Ohio. For individuals needing hair drug or alcohol screenings, Accredited Drug Testing is a purveyor of hair testing, with centers available across all cities Nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or other body areas is required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for unique testing necessities.

The method of drug testing has increasingly adopted hair follicle drug tests in recent times. Employers, legal systems, and professionals in Substance Abuse now opt for hair drug tests as an alternative to traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary monitoring due to their primary advantage of an extended detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days. They are conducted under observed conditions to prevent tampering, offering nearly infallible results. However, for detecting drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. A collection from near the scalp can offer up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred amount for testing and verification. For additional tests like EtG add-ons or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, the same volume of body hair is acceptable. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The key steps in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's database. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entries not handled by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While it's an economical means to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive result needs affirmation for legal acceptance. Samples testing presumptive positive in Screening require further verification.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, more hair gets removed from the original sample for Extraction. In this stage, substances are extracted from hair at a lesser concentration than with other testing mediums (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to conduct.

The final Confirmation of any positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug use up to 90 days compared to urine tests, which provide a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Altering the results of a hair drug test is significantly challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical insight: It can trace a pattern of substance use over a duration, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing options.
  • Result variances: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
