Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Hanover, Ohio. If a hair drug or alcohol examination is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities in all cities Nationwide capable of conducting a hair examination. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is typically required. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair analysis options.

Recently, the method for drug screening increasingly involves hair follicle analysis. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer a hair drug analysis over a traditional urine test. Hair analyses are favored by employers with zero-tolerance substance policies, courts, and probation clients. The main advantage of hair analysis is its extended detection window for substances, usually up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making it nearly foolproof. However, for recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has been recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximate three-month window of detection for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. When referencing head hair, we refer to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages involved in the laboratory handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a specimen into the lab’s system. This process encompasses verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, attributing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective approach to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples registering as presumptively positive in Screening mandate further confirmation.

Should a sample produce a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as the most intricate method to administer.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. Required washing of all presumptive positive samples is performed prior to confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug usage, not just a report of recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to detect recent consumption: Detection in hair takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternate testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variables like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth rates may affect drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine analysis in Hanover, OH, the benefits are clear.
Enhanced Detection: Hair testing surpasses traditional urine methods in detecting long-term substance use, providing superior reliability and precision for employers.
Broader Window: While urine tests capture recent usage, hair follicle analyses cover a comprehensive timeline of habitual use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
