Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Hartford, Ohio. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in this area and provides testing facilities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair examinations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has grown over the years. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts are leaning towards hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers maintaining zero-tolerance drug policies, legal systems, and individuals on probation benefit from this method. Hair follicle testing offers extended drug use detection of up to 90 days and involves a monitored collection process, making tampering nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for recent drug use detection, especially within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is now considered a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by trapping markers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat difficult to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for testing and validation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. By scalp hair, we mean head hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system. This process ensures that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any extra data not included by an electronic chain of custody system is recorded.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. This stage is cost-effective for eliminating drug use on most samples; however, a positive result must be validated to be considered court-acceptable. All samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original batch and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than those found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples indicating a presumptive positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can determine substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Minimal chance of manipulation: The accuracy of hair drug tests is ensured as it is notably tricky to alter the results.
  • Historical patterns: It reveals a timeline of drug use over time rather than recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the testing process analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine testing in Hartford, OH, the former emerges as a superior option. Hair testing not only offers greater accuracy but also provides a more comprehensive overview of an individual's substance use over time. In contrast, urine tests only offer a snapshot of recent usage, potentially missing patterns of consumption.

The benefit of hair tests lies in their ability to identify drug use long after ingestion, offering Hartford employers a reliable method to uphold drug-free environments. Furthermore, the evidence provided by hair tests is difficult to refute, lending stronger credibility to test results.

For businesses aiming to enforce strict drug policies, hair follicle tests in Hartford, OH, present a strong case. The reliability and depth of insight offered surpass the limited scope of traditional urine tests, ensuring drug-free workplaces and safeguarding health and safety.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Hartford, OH extends the detection period of drug use significantly. Unlike other methods, this testing technique can reveal a comprehensive substance use history over the previous three months. This broad detection window provides stakeholders with an extensive view of an individual's habits, aiding in making informed decisions.

The extended detection capability of hair follicle tests means employers in Hartford gain deeper insights into an applicant or employee's drug-related history. It empowers companies to hire or retain only those individuals who meet their stringent substance-free requirements.

For any organization in Hartford looking to maintain a thorough understanding of an individual's past substance use, hair follicle testing is an invaluable tool. The ability to track a 90-day history is not just a luxury, but a necessity for maintaining a safe and productive environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Hartford, OH, offers a robust solution against sample tampering. The nature of this method makes it incredibly difficult to adulterate or fake results, providing reliable and authentic readings. Unlike some other forms of testing, hair samples can't be easily substituted or contaminated.

For stakeholders concerned about the integrity of drug test results, hair follicle tests are a trustworthy option. This tamper-resistant quality ensures that the results are accurate and can be trusted for critical decision-making processes.

Employers in Hartford can have peace of mind knowing that hair follicle drug testing severely limits the possibilities of cheating. The authentic and dependable outcomes reinforce workplace safety and trust in an era where precision matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
