Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Haydenville, Ohio. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed for testing. These tests evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized hair testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a trusted method for detecting drug use. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals favor it over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are chosen for zero-tolerance policies, legal purposes, and probation checks, offering a detection period of up to 90 days with an almost uncheatable process. However, urine tests remain the best choice for recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers within the growing hair fiber. When taken close to the roots, hair can furnish a detection period of up to approximately three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, modification poses a challenge, and the sample is easy to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment with roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the roots yields 100mg—the optimal sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the sample is preferable. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair only, whereas body hair pertains to other types like facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The sequence for laboratory drug test processing consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a specimen within a lab's system. This step includes confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering additional data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary drug of abuse assessment. While it’s a cost-effective strategy to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive result must be verified for legal acceptance. Samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening need to undergo a secondary verification.

In cases of presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which explains why hair drug testing is the most challenging technique.

Confirmation for any positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny based on both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests are limited to shorter detection durations.
  • Cheating is difficult: Hair drug tests are challenging to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical insight: Can disclose a drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Hair requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Despite being referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair shaft rather than the scalp’s hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
