Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Higginsport, Ohio. If a hair-based drug or alcohol screening is required, we specialize in this type of testing, with locations Nationwide capable of executing it. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient. Hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specific testing requirements.

Lately, drug testing approaches have increasingly involved the hair follicle method. It's preferred by many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over the conventional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and defendants on probation often mandate it. The major advantage lies in its long detection timeframe, up to 90 days, with supervised collection and little chance of tampering. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now viewed as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. The hair captures long-term evidence of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within its fiber structure as it grows. With collection near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 90-day period for detecting substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, comprising about 200 individual strands close to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. Head hair specifically refers to hair on the scalp, whereas body hair includes all other hair types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug test result process in a lab involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step in handling a sample within the lab's system. This step covers confirming that the sample is appropriately sealed and delivered, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing details not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid test for substances of abuse. While Screening effectively rules out drug usage for most cases, a positive screen necessitates further confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples that suggest a positive result in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a test shows presumptive positivity during Screening, further hair is taken from the original sample and processed for Extraction. In this phase, drug extraction from hair occurs at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

The confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are washed before confirmation as needed. The progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the standards of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: A hair drug test is exceptionally hard to deceive, resulting in more trustworthy outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug use over an extended duration, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent consumption not detected: It takes about 5 to 7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strands, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
