Located in Highland Heights, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide, with facilities across all cities ready to conduct the test you need, be it for drugs, alcohol, or tailored hair testing solutions. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is required for the test.

Recently, there's been a shift towards utilizing hair follicle drug tests for substance screening. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists are favoring hair tests due to their significant advantages over conventional urine tests. This type of test is highly beneficial for institutions with strict drug-free policies as it can detect drug use over a much longer period, often up to 90 days, and is very difficult to manipulate. Yet, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an exceptional method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged history by sequestering biomarkers within the fibers of the extending hair strand. When harvested near the scalp, hair offers up to around a 3-month time frame for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, quite resistant to tampering, and convenient to dispatch.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, considered the perfect quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a specimen into a laboratory's database. This involves ensuring the sample was thoroughly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and capturing any extra data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive finding needs validation for court acceptability. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample presents a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and made ready for Extraction. In this process, drugs are drawn out of hair at a notably lower concentration than alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation as appropriate. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, yielding more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It enables tracking a pattern of drug consumption over time, not limited to recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to spot recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing options.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Choose Hair Testing Over Urine Testing? In Highland Heights, OH, the rationale is clear. Hair follicle tests boast a superior detection capability, capturing substance use traces well beyond the limits of traditional urine tests. These tests ensure a higher level of accuracy and reliability, vital for settings with stringent substance monitoring requirements, making them an ideal choice for thorough drug screening.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing is invaluable. With the ability to reveal drug use from up to 90 days prior, it affords employers in Highland Heights, OH, a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history. This lengthy detection period surpasses that of urine tests, enabling a thorough assessment critical for informed decision-making in hiring and employment continuity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the key benefits of hair follicle drug testing is its tamper-resistant nature. In Highland Heights, OH, this aspect is crucial as it dramatically reduces the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring the results are trustworthy and beyond reproach. The robust methodology used in hair testing safeguards the integrity of the results, giving stakeholders peace of mind regarding their dependability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
