Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hooven, Ohio. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, our testing centers are conveniently located in cities nationwide. Typically, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate custom testing needs.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has become a preferred method for substance testing. It is commonly required by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals, replacing standard urine tests. Hair tests benefit organizations with zero-tolerance policies by offering a 90-day detection window. While highly secure and cheat-proof, urine tests remain the method of choice for detecting recent drug usage within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers a prolonged timeline of analyte information by embedding markers within the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, it can reveal substance presence for as long as 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for delivery.

A section of hair, around 1.5 inches long with about 200 strands (approximately matching a #2 pencil thickness), located nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and validation. For tests involving EtG, additional substances, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's best to determine the sample's weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, a comparable portion of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other kinds of hair (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of achieving a drug test result involves four fundamental phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase where a sample gets input into a lab's system. This phase verifies the sample's integrity and proper shipment, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any additional data entry absent on an electronic chain of custody log.

Screening offers an expeditious review for substances of misuse. Screening is generally a cost-effective strategy to eliminate drug presence in most cases, yet, a confirmed positive result is needed for legal defensibility. Any samples deemed initially positive in Screening require a follow-up validation.

When a sample registers a positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated in the hair at concentrations notably lower than found with other testing methods (for instance, urine or saliva), which is why hair drug testing is among the toughest testing methods.

For any initially positive screening outcomes, confirmation is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All initial positive samples undergo washing as part of the confirmation process. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the full laboratory procedure is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and certification per ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, compared to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair test is notably hard, rendering outcomes more reliable.
  • Chronological substance use insight: It offers a sequence of drug intake patterns over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to become observable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically more costly than alternative testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Variables like hair shade and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hooven, OH, hair follicle testing proves superior to urine tests due to its extended detection windows, determining drug use up to 90 days prior. The enhanced accuracy ensures a reliable evaluation of an individual's substance history, providing employers with greater assurance in their hiring decisions. Hair testing offers a robust method for organizations prioritizing a drug-free workplace environment.

Compared to traditional urine testing, where detection only spans a brief window, hair tests identify ongoing substance use patterns over months. Employers benefit from understanding long-term behaviors, crucial for roles with high safety or responsibility. Reliable and accurate, hair tests are invaluable for maintaining workplace integrity and enforcing policies consistently.

Extended Detection Window

Offering a significant advantage in Hooven, OH, hair follicle testing extends the detection window for drug use analysis up to 90 days. This thorough examination offers employers a detailed view of an applicant or employee's substance habits, critical for roles requiring high integrity standards. A comprehensive understanding is vital in assessing long-term behaviors beyond recent use.

Employers gain insights not accessible through other testing methods, particularly pertinent for industries necessitating stringent safety and compliance adherence. This extensive detection capability ensures prioritization of workplace safety and informed decision-making during recruitment processes.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
