In Jacobsburg, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise lies in hair testing. With testing centers nationwide, including all cities, we perform reliable hair tests. Generally, individuals should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body for testing. Hair tests may screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often choose hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation individuals. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window, often up to 90 days. They are conducted under observation, making them difficult to tamper with. However, for drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. It involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift check for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests provide a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is highly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use across a duration, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing is increasingly favored over urine tests in Jacobsburg, OH. This method offers a larger detection window, often revealing drug use up to 90 days prior. In contrast, urine tests are limited to a shorter detection period, making them less reliable for ongoing substance use patterns.

When compared to traditional urine tests, hair testing stands out for its accuracy and reliability. The observed collection and tamper-resistant nature of hair samples ensure a superior detection accuracy, offering a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history.

Extended Detection Window

In Jacobsburg, OH, hair follicle testing excels with its ability to reveal substance use over an extended period, up to 90 days. This allows employers to access a thorough examination of an individual’s drug use history, offering more comprehensive insights compared to other testing methods.

Such a prolonged detection window is vital, especially for employers seeking to assess a potential or current employee’s long-term commitment to a drug-free lifestyle. The extended window provides a clear picture of substance use patterns over time.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The reduction of sample tampering is a crucial benefit of hair follicle tests in Jacobsburg, OH. Unlike some methods that might be manipulated, hair testing significantly minimizes the risk of adulteration, ensuring reliable outcomes that are beyond doubt.

Given the closely monitored collection process, hair tests provide unquestionable results. This integrity makes them an essential choice for organizations requiring foolproof drug testing procedures, ensuring that manipulation is virtually impossible.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
