In Jasper, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. For those in need of a hair or alcohol examination, our specialty lies in these tests, with numerous testing sites across the United States. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is required. Such tests may detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for additional hair screenings.

The prevalence of hair follicle testing has grown in recent times for drug assessments. This method is increasingly favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over the conventional urine test. It's particularly utilized by those with strict drug-free directives, legal entities, and probation individuals. Its main advantage lies in an extended detection window of nearly 90 days, offering a more tamper-proof and observed collection process. However, urine tests remain most precise for recent drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected from near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use over an approximately three-month period. Collection is straightforward, complicating adulteration and simplifying transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) gathered closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, considered the preferred sample for both screening and confirmatory purposes. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for measuring the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially integrating the sample into the laboratory system, ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial assessment for the presence of illicit substances. Although cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require secondary verification.

Should the sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair with greater precision compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably complex.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and alignment with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter duration.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Data over time: It delivers a historical overview of drug use, not limited to recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Individual factors like hair color and growth variations affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
