Situated in Jewett, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug screening services. When you require drug or alcohol testing through hair samples, look no further than our nationwide facilities, each equipped to conduct hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body can be used. These tests examine substances like drugs and alcohol/ETG, with options for custom testing.

Lately, hair follicle tests have become a preferable method in drug screening. An increasing number of organizations, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine ones. Hair follicle tests are employed by entities with zero-tolerance stances on drugs, including employers, judicial systems, and probation officers. Their prime advantage is the extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, with the collection process being supervised, minimizing cheating opportunities. However, for identifying recent drug use within a five-day window, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is perceived as a significant method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. If collected near the scalp, hair delivers roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample for both screening and confirming. For EtG, extra tests, and/or tests more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial sample processing into a laboratory system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary quick check for drug abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient way to rule out drug use for most samples; however, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive in the Screening, more hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted at a significantly lower concentration from hair compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Costly: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in outcomes: Differences like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test assesses the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Jewett, OH, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests by offering improved detection precision and reliability. The extended detection window provides a thorough overview of substance use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
