Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Johnstown, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing is backed by a nationwide network of testing centers, including in all cities, ready to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of the head or body suffices. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, the judiciary, and Substance Abuse specialists are favoring this method over standard urine tests. Employers imposing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals utilize hair follicle tests. The major advantage is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, with collection under observation and resistance to fraudulent practices. For drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug exposure by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over an approximate 3-month span. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of around 200 strands (resembling the girth of a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen volume of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial recording of a specimen within a lab’s system. This step checks if the sample was sealed and sent correctly, designates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any other data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary swift inspection for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an efficient approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen result must be verified for legal acceptance. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening demand a subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen shows a presumptive positive during Screening, a further amount of hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a relatively lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), hence, hair drug testing is recognized as the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screened result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive result undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Weakness in detecting recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically dearer than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair coloration and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly named "hair follicle tests", the evaluation actually examines the hair strand and not the scalp’s hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in Johnstown, OH through unparalleled detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
