Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments across Kansas, Ohio. For those seeking hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair diagnostics, with facilities nationwide that conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head hair or body hair are needed. Analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, the preference for drug analysis has increasingly favored hair follicle testing. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle analysis is ideal for organizations enforcing drug-free policies, legal parties, and probationers. The chief advantage of this method is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, using a supervised collection process that's nearly foolproof. However, for detecting usage within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by storing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer almost a 3-month detection span for drugs and alcohol. Hair is effortless to collect, hard to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. Referring to head hair indicates scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage where a sample is processed into the lab’s system. It entails ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court acceptance. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a positive result emerges during the Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted at a lower concentration in hair compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter period.
  • Difficulty in evasion: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical information: It provides a usage pattern of drugs over a time span, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
