In Kimball, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair analysis. Our testing centers are available in cities across the nation, prepared to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for testing. Hair tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing in recent years. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists now opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation services rely on this method. A significant advantage is the extended detection period, up to 90 days, and the stringent collection process that minimizes tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair encapsulates long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to almost a 3-month timeframe for alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to gather, somewhat tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be acquired. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Brief Process Outline

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial entry of a sample into a lab's system. This process verifies that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, generates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any other data input not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid evaluation for drug presence. Though an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be authenticated to be valid in legal settings. Samples showing potential positivity in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show signs of positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Herein, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower levels than by other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Validation of any positive screen result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any potential positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab progression from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine analyses with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to circumvent: It's significantly challenging to evade a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers usage history: It can outline a usage pattern over a while, rather than just recent usage.

Constraints:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses often cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
