Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Kinsman Center, Ohio. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing, with centers in cities nationwide that can conduct a hair test. You need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head's crown, or body hair can be used in most cases. Hair tests can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judges, and Substance Abuse experts now request a hair drug test as opposed to a traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, the judiciary, and for individuals under probation. A key advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its prolonged detection period, usually up to 90 days, collected in an observed manner, making it nearly foolproof. Still, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise measure.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug history by encapsulating biomarkers in the hair strand's growing fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present up to a three-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommended 150mg of the sample should be used. We suggest determining the sample's weight using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we focus only on scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the sample's initial processing into the lab system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data that is not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary, rapid check for drug substances. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result demands confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. Samples that show a presumptive positive outcome in Screening require further validation.

For a sample that tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is the most challenging method.

A confirmed positive screening result undergoes confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are washed as necessary before confirmation. The overall lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage over a 90-day timeframe, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating the results of a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers usage patterns: It provides a history of drug usage over time, rather than recent use only.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to show in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other test methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite common references to "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Kinsman Center, OH, hair follicle testing proves to be superior to traditional urine testing. One significant advantage is its far-reaching detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests reveal drug history over months, offering a more thorough profile of an individual's substance consumption. This ensures that organizations can maintain a drug-free environment by leveraging heightened detection capabilities.

Extended Detection Window

A significant benefit of hair follicle testing in Kinsman Center, OH, is its extended detection window, covering up to 90 days of drug use history. This wide timeframe enables employers to assess an applicant or employee's long-term substance use, providing a comprehensive understanding of their habits. Such extended detection is instrumental in ensuring a safer workplace and making informed hiring decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
