Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Kirtland, Ohio. For individuals requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair analysis, with centers available in all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prevalence as a method for substance detection, often replacing traditional urine tests for employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals with zero-tolerance policies. The key advantage is a 90-day detection window, obtained under supervision, and nearly foolproof. Yet, urine tests remain best for drug use detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a potent tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical overview of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest assessing the specimen’s weight on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug testing result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a swift initial assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated to be valid in a legal setting. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. At this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair distinction and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timespan.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Shows historical patterns: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing options.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
