Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lafayette, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing's expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities across the country ready to conduct such tests. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Hair tests are capable of identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offering other specialized testing solutions.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a staple method in drug testing. They are increasingly favored by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation often use them. Their principal advantage lies in their extended detection window, up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and their resistance to tampering. However, when detecting recent drug use, within about 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. Obtaining hair samples near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use for roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprised of about 200 strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We advocate for weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be taken. "Head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" covers all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result is composed of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into a laboratory's system. This process involves ensuring the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any pending data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for excluding drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court validity. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

Presumptive positives at the Screening phase require additional hair extraction from the original sample for further preparation in Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most complex methodology.

Positive screening confirmations are performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptive positive undergo pre-confirmation washing as required. The entire process from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Minimal chances of deception: Hair drug tests are exceptionally hard to falsify, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Chronological drug use data: It offers insight into long-term drug use patterns rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
