Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Lake Lakengren, Ohio. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair evaluations, and we operate testing centers in every city nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or another part of the body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other purposes.

In recent years, drug testing increasingly relies on hair follicle analysis. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are popular among employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and probation officers due to their extensive detection window of up to 90 days, observation during collection, and the difficulty of tampering. However, for drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain the most definitive.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's growing fibers. When sourced from a location near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch portion with roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and verification. For EtG, added tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes every other type of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a lab's framework. This process includes ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data input not provided by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a swift preliminary evaluation for drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective strategy to negate drug usage in the vast majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that show presumptive positives in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair in significantly lower concentrations than in alternate techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which underscores why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to perform.

Confirmation of any positive Screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entirety of the laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with urine exams that offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug evaluations are very resistant to manipulation, rendering outcomes more precise.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a timeline of drug usage across a span, beyond just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It needs 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair samples.
  • Cost: Hair drug assessments are typically priced higher than alternate testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variability can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
