Based in Lindale, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing. Our expertise in hair testing is extensive, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct your test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or specific requirements. A sample from the crown with 1.5 to 2 inches of hair length is usually essential; body hair is also viable when needed.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has surged, being favored by many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over urine tests. This test is integral for organizations with strict drug policies, judicial processes, and probation requirements. Its advantage lies in a long detection window of up to 90 days, and its direct supervised process minimizes manipulation. Despite this, urine tests still lead in recent use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to ship.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 strands of hair (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may suffice. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial processing within a laboratory’s system. This entails confirming the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. While Screening economically evaluates most samples for drug absence, confirming a positive screen is essential for legal admissibility. Samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If Screening flags a sample presumptively positive, additional hair is retrieved from the main specimen and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can reveal patterns of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Undetectable recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lindale, OH, hair testing stands superior due to its unparalleled detection capabilities. While urine tests have reigned as the traditional method, hair follicle screenings catch a broader window of substance use, marked by its reliability and accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
