Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Litchfield, Ohio. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, we are specialists in this area and have facilities across various cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or other body parts can be used. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method in drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly requesting hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation use these tests. The main advantage is a longer detection window for substance use, up to 90 days, collected under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair as a method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption is seen as very effective. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and various drugs by holding biomarkers within its fibers. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use for roughly 3 months. It’s easy to collect, tough to tamper with, and simple to ship.

Cutting a 1.5-inch piece of about 200 hairs near the scalp yields 100mg, the perfect quantity for tests and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or drug panels exceeding 10, 150mg is preferred. It's advised to weigh this on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar amount of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about entering a sample into the laboratory’s process. This step verifies that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is the initial rapid check for drugs. While it is a budget-friendly way to eliminate drug usage in many samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be court-valid. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require a second confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are pulled from hair at concentrations lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening highly challenging.

Confirmation of a positive screen uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation if required. Comprehensive reviews of the lab from Accessioning to Confirmation adhere to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and also ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a much shorter span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, increasing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical usage: This method can reveal usage trends over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to show up in the hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than other drug testing strategies.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can change drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
