In Lockbourne, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screenings. Specializing in this field, we provide numerous testing locations across the nation for your convenience. To conduct a hair test, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is typically needed. These tests can reveal drug or alcohol consumption, and include tailored options for diverse needs.

In recent trends, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as an alternative to traditional urine tests among employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts. This testing method is preferred by those enforcing strict no-drug policies, thanks to its extended detection window of up to 90 days and observed sample collection process that reduces cheating risks. However, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain a reliable choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to alter, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests above 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of processing a sample into a laboratory's system. This step confirms the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening efficiently rules out drug usage for the majority of samples, any positive result requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

In the Screening phase, if a sample is presumptively positive, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

Confirming any positive screening result is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is extremely hard to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical information: It provides a pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Even though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand instead of the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
