In Loveland Park, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, we focus on hair testing, with facilities available across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is used. These tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various hair testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity recently as it's being preferred over traditional urine tests by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. It's used by those with zero-tolerance drug policies due to its extensive detection period, which can reach up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making it hard to manipulate. However, for detecting drug use within the first 5 days, urine tests still offer the best accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures and holds biomarkers within the fiber as it grows, thereby offering a comprehensive history of substances such as alcohol. When taken from near the scalp, hair samples can reflect substance use over a span of up to three months. The collection process is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch lock consisting of 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) taken closest to the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the optimal sample weight for both screening and confirmation analysis. For EtG assessments, additional panels over ten, or specific add-ons, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. If scalp hair is inadequate, a proportional quantity of body hair is an alternative. 'Head hair' means scalp hair only, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other hair types like facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test is comprised of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's entry into the laboratory system, involving verification of proper sealing and shipping, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any necessary supplemental data entry, apart from what an electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening is a preliminary assessment aimed at detecting substance misuse. Although it is a cost-efficient technique for eliminating drug use in most samples, positive findings must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Any samples found potentially positive during Screening must undergo a subsequent confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is gathered from the original sample for the Extraction phase. At this stage, drug substances are isolated from the hair at lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug analysis one of the most complex methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results obtained from screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Any samples identified as presumptive positive receive a wash before the confirmation process when necessary. From Accessioning through to Confirmation, the complete laboratory procedure is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program as well as the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Compared to urine tests, hair drug tests offer a detection timeline extending up to 90 days.
  • Resilience against tampering: Due to its nature, a hair drug test is notably resistant to deceit, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Insight into habitual use: It allows the discernment of long-term drug use patterns, unlike tests that only show recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Detecting drugs via hair necessitates an approximately 5-7 day waiting period post-exposure.
  • Expense: Hair testing usually incurs higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and personal growth rates can influence the levels of drug markers in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" often arises, but the actual test analyzes the hair itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
