Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Lucas, Ohio. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing, with centers nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or elsewhere on the body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other customized testing options.

Recently, drug testing increasingly encompasses hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and professionals in substance abuse now prefer these over standard urine tests. Hair tests are utilized by employers upholding zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage lies in their long detection window, often up to 90 days, captured in a supervised process, making evasion nearly impossible. However, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have increasingly become a significant method for discovering drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers in a hair strand capture biomarkers that chronicle a prolonged history of substance use. When clipped near the scalp, hair reveals a detection capability for alcohol and drugs over a duration of up to three months. Hair is straightforward to gather, has some resistance to tampering, and is conveniently transportable.

To acquire the ideal amount for analysis, collect a 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands (resembling a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG, supplementary assessments, and evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable, weighed accurately using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair is acceptable. The term "head hair" solely applies to the scalp, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types, like facial and axillary.

Process Summary

The laboratory workflow for processing a drug test includes four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially integrated into the lab’s system, ensuring proper sealing and transportation, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and conducting any supplementary data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most cases, a positive result in Screening needs confirmation to stand in a legal context. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening require additional validation.

When a positive is suspected after Screening, more hairs are taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drug compounds are isolated from hair at much lower levels than methods like urine or oral fluid analysis, marking hair drug tests as notably challenging.

Final Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome employs techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positives undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is vetted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and accredited following ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug examinations:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses reveal substance use extending to 90 days, surpassing the shorter windows of urine analyses.
  • Low susceptibility to manipulation: Higher accuracy from the difficulty to adulterate hair tests.
  • Illustrates usage patterns: Captures extended usage trends rather than recent consumption alone.

Shortcomings:

  • Ineffective for detecting recent consumption: A 5-7 day delay for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair analyses generally command higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination evaluates the strand rather than the actual follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Lucas, OH Hair testing outshines urine tests in several ways, primarily in its superior detection accuracy. While urine tests are usually accurate, they fall short in identifying prolonged substance use, missing out on long-term drug consumption patterns.

Hair follicle analyses offer an improved detection timeline, usually up to 90 days, providing a comprehensive overview of substance use habits. Furthermore, the reliability of hair tests strengthens employer confidence, as the results are difficult to manipulate compared to urine tests. Employers benefit significantly from the reliability of hair testing, aligning with zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Lucas, OH One of the standout features of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window. Unlike other methods, hair tests can trace drug use back up to 90 days.

This lengthy detection period provides an in-depth look into an individual's substance history, invaluable for employers assessing applicant or employee behavior over time. Such long-term insights help businesses make informed decisions, ensuring workplace integrity and reducing potential risks. The comprehensive perspective offered by hair testing is unmatched in traditional testing methodologies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Lucas, OH Hair follicle testing significantly reduces the chance of sample tampering. The collection process is thorough and observed, making it exceedingly difficult for sample adulteration to occur.

This robust testing method ensures that results are reliable and uncontestable. Employers and legal entities can trust the outcomes of these tests, as their tamper-resistant nature upholds integrity and accuracy. Thus, hair follicle analyses offer a trustworthy and secure means of drug testing, widely preferred for their reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
