Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations throughout Luhrig, Ohio. Should you require an analysis for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair-specific testing, and we maintain facilities nationwide capable of conducting these exams. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is sufficient. The tests can identify substances, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized analyses.

In recent times, more organizations have opted for the hair follicle method over traditional testing. This approach is increasingly favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts, replacing the standard urine analysis. Businesses with strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probation officials, frequently select hair testing. Its main advantage is the extended detection duration, lasting up to 90 days, obtained through a strictly monitored process, making tampering nearly impossible. Yet, urine analysis remains effective for detecting recent use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a valuable instrument in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. Obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of nearly 3 months for alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, delivers 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Using a jeweler's scale is suggested for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. By 'head hair,' we mean only scalp hair. 'Body hair' includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial step of processing a sample within a laboratory's system. This step encompasses the verification that a sample was properly sealed and delivered, the assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and the completion of any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a quick preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample results in a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drug compounds are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to perform.

Any positive screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the whole laboratory method is supervised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are challenging to deceive, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can demonstrate a pattern of substance use over a period, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other drug test methods.
  • Diversity in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair testing to urine tests in Luhrig, OH, reveals clear benefits. Hair tests offer superior detection accuracy, providing a broader window into an individual's substance use over time. Unlike urine tests, which capture only recent consumption, hair testing paints a detailed picture of habitual drug use, crucial for employers adhering to strict policies.

The reliability of hair testing further elevates its appeal. While urine tests are more susceptible to tampering, hair analysis offers increased protection against manipulation, ensuring the integrity and authenticity of the result.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Luhrig, OH, is invaluable for its extended detection window, capable of identifying drug use over a period of up to 90 days. This lengthened time frame provides employers with a comprehensive understanding of an employee's or applicant's substance history, unlike the limited snapshot offered by traditional tests.

This extended window helps employers make informed decisions, separating occasional use from habitual patterns, providing them a clearer basis for assessing adherence to workplace policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Luhrig, OH, values the tamper-resistant qualities of hair follicle testing. This method significantly reduces the risk of adulteration, unlike urine tests, which can easily be manipulated. The inherent design of hair testing makes it nearly impossible to alter results, ensuring authenticity and precise results every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
