Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Marblehead, Ohio. For those in need of hair or alcohol testing, our specialty lies in hair analysis. With centers across all cities Nationwide, you can obtain a hair test conducted easily. Generally, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body, though hair tests are versatile enough to analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized parameters.

Recently, hair follicle drug analysis has become a preferred method in drug testing. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, court mandates, and probation requirements. The hair follicle method's main advantage is its extended drug detection window, up to 90 days, executed under observation, making tampering nearly impossible. Nevertheless, urine testing remains the go-to for recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair samples can offer detection of alcohol and drugs for up to around three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is an optimal amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional components, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, collecting 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is suggested. If hair from the scalp is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain strictly to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in a laboratory involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage where a sample is introduced to the laboratory system. Tasks include ensuring the sample’s seal and shipment integrity, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any missing data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift evaluation for substances of abuse. Although cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most cases, a positive result from Screening requires validation for legal acceptance. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis particularly intricate.

Verification of positive Screening outcomes is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing when necessary. The full assessment from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited in line with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Detects drug use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with brief detection timelines.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, thus ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage insight: Offers a timeline of drug usage over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than alternative testing forms.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually evaluates the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands out in Marblehead, OH, for its superior capabilities compared to urine testing. While urine tests are common, hair testing shines in terms of detection precision and reliability, offering a broader window to uncover substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
