In McComb, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing offers services through testing centers across all U.S. cities. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is usually required. Hair testing options include detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing solutions.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has grown more common in recent years. Many organizations, including employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and substance abuse experts, now favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window for substance use, covering up to 90 days. Conducted under supervision, this method is nearly impossible to tamper with, but urine tests remain more effective for identifying recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an efficient means to uncover the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair acts as a repository, capturing a long-term timeline of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the growing hair's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

To obtain the optimal 100mg of hair for testing, a 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hairs (roughly comparable to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp is ideal. However, for EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair denote scalp hair exclusively, while body hair includes all other varieties (such as facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results is comprised of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially integrated into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding information entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening represents a preliminary and rapid assessment for drug abuse. While cost-efficient for negating drug use for the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo necessary washing pre-confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate drug use patterns over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: There is a 5-7 day delay before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly misnamed as "hair follicle tests", the examination assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
