Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in McDermott, Ohio. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with facilities located across the country capable of performing hair tests. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body hair as an alternative. Hair testing can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made options.

Over the past years, the drug testing landscape has shifted to frequently incorporate hair follicle drug tests. This method is increasingly preferred by employers, judicial courts, and Substance Abuse experts over the standard urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal systems, and individuals under probation often opt for hair follicle tests. Key advantages of this method include its extended detection ability, reaching up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that's almost impossible to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers an extended history of substance use. When hair is taken near the scalp, it enables detection up to around a 3-month period for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch snippet consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the prime sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is recommended. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a matching amount of body hair can be obtained. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missed information not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs. Although Screening is an affordable means to exclude drug presence in most samples, any positive findings require confirmation to stand in judicial settings. Samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a confirmatory follow-up.

If the sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the sample and readied for Extraction. During this process, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining the complexity of hair drug testing.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used to affirm any positive screening outcomes. All samples with presumptive positives undergo a washing process before confirmation if required. Throughout the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation, adherence is maintained to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug presence for as long as 90 days, which surpasses the detection timeframe of urine tests.
  • Hard to trick: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Chronological data: It provides a record of drug use over time, rather than just capturing recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: It typically takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result inconsistency: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the process evaluates the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
