Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle testing in Millville, Ohio. Specializing in this method, our centers in cities nationwide can conduct a comprehensive hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. This test can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for special requirements.

Recently, drug testing methods are increasingly utilizing hair follicle tests. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer it over the traditional urine test. Hair tests, favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officials, offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days, making tampering almost impossible. Yet, for drug usage over the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly been recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand’s fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can provide an approximately 3-month detection window for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 strands of hair (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drug detection. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, confirmation is necessary for any screen considered positive to be court-admissible. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

In the event a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening stage, additional hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Verification of any positive Screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which offer shorter detection timelines.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test proves quite challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It reveals a historical pattern of drug use rather than solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after intake.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly labeled “hair follicle tests”, the actual analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Millville, OH, offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests in various ways. Firstly, hair tests provide a broader detection window, identifying substance use months later. Unlike urine tests, which detect only recent drug use, hair testing captures a more extended history, providing comprehensive substance use insights.

Further, hair follicle tests boast superior detection accuracy in Millville, OH. With a nearly tamper-proof collection process, hair testing eliminates the risks of adulteration common in urine tests. This enhanced security appeals to employers and courts, valuing test integrity and trustworthy results in maintaining drug-free standards.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Millville, OH, is distinguished by its extended detection window, offering an expansive look at substance use history. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, this method surpasses others, presenting a thorough assessment of an individual's past behavior. Employers can rely on this to make well-informed recruitment or retention decisions.

The prolonged detection capability of hair testing gives unrivaled insights into an applicant or employee's drug usage over months, rather than just days. This comprehensive view enables businesses in Millville, OH, to implement robust substance-free policies, ensuring only candidates who abide by workplace standards are considered.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
