Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Minford, Ohio. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with testing facilities available in all major cities across the nation capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body, which is adequate. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for conducting drug tests. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with stringent zero-tolerance policies, court systems, and probation officers often choose this method. The main advantage is its longer detection window, often extending up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it virtually tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands, hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol usage. When gathered near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol presence for a timeframe reaching up to three months. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil in circumference) located closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. When discussing head hair, it is specific to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory processing encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample into the lab's system. This procedure comprises checking that the sample is correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening serves as an initial rapid evaluation for substance abuse. While a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug presence in a majority of samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that give a preliminary positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation step.

Should a sample yield a preliminary positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other methods (for instance, urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging to execute.

Positive screening results proceed to Confirmation by utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is assessed according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is considerably challenging, thus results are more reliable.
  • Offers past usage information: It supplies a historical pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug evaluations are pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence detected drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
