In Monfort Heights East, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing proudly offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available nationwide to conduct these assessments. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is necessary. Hair examinations are versatile, identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offering tailored testing options.

Recently, the preference for conducting drug assessments has increasingly included hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair testing over traditional urine analyses. These tests are particularly favored by organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. A key advantage is their extended detection period, often up to 90 days, coupled with a supervised collection process that thwarts evasion attempts. Yet, for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an essential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by holding biomarkers within the strands’ fibers as they grow. When samples are collected near the scalp, they can offer up to an estimated 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is easy, slightly challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG tests, add-ons, or those surpassing 10 panels, a total of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. The term head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other types of hair (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of drug tests typically includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a sample is entered into the system of a laboratory. It involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it provides a cost-effective means of excluding drug use in the majority of samples, any positive findings must be confirmed to be suitable for legal proceedings. Samples that yield presumptive positive results in Screening require additional confirmation.

When Screening results indicate a presumptively positive outcome, further hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are taken from hair at lower concentrations than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screenings are viewed as the most complex to perform.

Confirming any positive screening finding involves methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, along with accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests, which have shorter detection periods.
  • Testing accuracy: It is nearly impossible to falsify a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historic data evaluation: It can deliver a timeline of drug usage over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Around 5-7 days are required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often named "hair follicle tests," these analyses actually evaluate the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
