Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Monfort Heights South, Ohio. If you're in need of drug or alcohol hair testing, we specialize in this service and offer testing centers across the nation, ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are now often opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation services utilize hair follicle tests. Their key advantage is a longer detection window for drug use, up to 90 days, through a monitored collection process, which makes it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for identifying most recent drug use, within about the past week, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record for these substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of a growing strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use history up to a 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for evaluation and verification. For tests involving EtG, extra assays, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If hair from the scalp is absent, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was securely sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplemental data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be verified to stand in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples considered presumptively positive undergo a washing prior to Confirmation if deemed necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug analyses can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine analyses which have a briefer detection span.
  • Cheating resistance: It is highly challenging to falsify a hair drug analysis, leading to more precise results.
  • Historical data provision: It offers a historical pattern of drug ingestion, covering a timespan rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs require about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally cost more than alternative drug analysis techniques.
  • Result variations: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
