Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Montgomery, Ohio. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is supported by testing centers available in cities nationwide, equipped to conduct these tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically necessary from the head or body for analysis. Tests can reveal substances, alcohol/ETG, or include tailored testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been adopted as a favored method for drug testing. This approach is often preferred by employers, the judicial system, and professionals managing Substance Abuse cases over the traditional urine test. Employers with strict drug policies, legal authorities, and probation programs often opt for hair tests. A key advantage is the extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, with observations made under direct supervision, minimizing the chance of tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has emerged as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the expanding hair strand, hair presents an extensive history of alcohol and drug use. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 90-day detection timeframe for substances. It's straightforward to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for exact measurement. Should scalp hair be lacking, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. Our reference to head hair solely pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal phases in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary rapid assessment for abusive substances. Although Screening is an economical method to negate drug usage in most samples, court-admissible results require confirmation of any positive screen. Samples that are preliminary positive in Screening necessitate further validation.

Should a sample indicate preliminary positivity during Screening, additional hair is gathered from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing one of the most complex methods to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initial positive samples undergo washing if required before verification. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair regulation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug assessment, enhancing result precision.
  • Reveals usage trends: It can indicate a timeline of drug consumption over a stretch, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting current use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug assessments are pricier compared to alternate testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Influences like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Referred to often as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation itself analyzes the hair strand, not the underlying hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Montgomery, OH
Hair tests excel in detecting drug substances over time, unlike traditional urine tests which only identify recent use. Hair analyses provide consistent reliability and accuracy due to their broad detection window. This makes hair testing a superior choice for maintaining strict workplace drug policies while ensuring higher accuracy compared to urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Montgomery, OH
Hair follicle testing stands out by detecting drug use over an extensive period, often up to 90 days. This longer window enables employers to gain meaningful insights into an individual's drug-use history, ensuring they have a clear understanding of an employee or applicant's past behavior, promoting informed decision-making and workplace integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Montgomery, OH
One notable advantage of hair follicle testing is its resilience against tampering. Unlike some testing methods that may be easily manipulated, hair tests provide reliable results that are not easily adulterated. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
