In Morral, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle analysis. For those needing drug or alcohol tests via hair, our specialized centers are nationwide, ready to assist. Hair samples need to be 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Hair follicle tests have grown in popularity for drug screening recently. Preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over urine tests, these tests are ideal for those upholding strict policies. They detect drug use over a long period, up to 90 days, with an observed collection method to prevent tampering. However, urine tests may be more effective for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. Collected close to the scalp, hair offers up to a roughly 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This involves validating that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified to be allowable in court. Any samples presumed positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is extremely difficult to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It showcases a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Morral, OH, hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine tests in several ways. These tests boast a higher detection accuracy, offering a reliable snapshot of an individual's drug history. While urine tests cover a shorter detection range, hair testing can uncover patterns of substance use months back, ensuring a more comprehensive assessment for employers and professionals. The reliability of hair testing proves advantageous compared to the variability seen in urine analysis.

The precision of hair testing in Morral provides several benefits over standard urine tests. Hair samples don't require on-the-spot collection, reducing potential embarrassment and tampering attempts. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis offers consistent results, unaffected by hydration levels or recent attempts to detox. Employers value this stability, gaining confidence in testing outcomes that reflect actual substance use patterns over extended periods.

Extended Detection Window

Morral, OH benefits immensely from hair follicle testing due to its extended detection window. This method traces drug use up to 90 days prior, offering a detailed view into an individual's substance history. For employers, this expansive detection period provides critical insights, ensuring a true reflection of a candidate's habits over time. Compared to urine tests, hair's lengthy detection period presents an unparalleled advantage in maintaining workplace excellence.

With hair follicle tests, Morral businesses gain a transparent lookout into past substance use. Spanning as long as 90 days, the length of the detection window reveals patterns not achievable with urine testing, uncovering past drug habits to aid in recruitment and HR decisions. This comprehensive analysis translates into a more secure and informed workplace, preparatory measures can be made accurately based on each employee’s comprehensive history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Minimizing tampering risks remains a top priority, and in Morral, OH, hair follicle tests shine by ensuring sample integrity. The collection process is straightforward, with samples gathered under observation, virtually eliminating adulteration threats. Hair testing drastically reduces common pitfalls associated with other methods, such as urine exams subject to substitution or dilution. This reliability champions hair analysis as the primary defense against compromised results.

Hair follicle tests in Morral set the standard for tamper-resistant testing. The controlled collection process circumvents common cheating attempts seen with urine tests, safeguarding result accuracy. Employers benefit from this innovative approach, which neutralizes the risk of altered samples. The security inherent in hair testing reassures companies, providing peace of mind knowing their drug testing procedures are well-protected against tampering.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
