Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analysis for drug substances in Mount Carmel, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, we're specialists in this field, with centers across the country ready to conduct these tests. You'll generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or another body area for testing. Our hair exams can detect drug use, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become more common for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle exams are favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, the observed collection method, and the difficulty of tampering. However, for identifying recent drug use within a five-day window, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are deemed a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When obtained adjacent to the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug or alcohol use for a period extending up to roughly three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch snippet of about 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary evaluations, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of hair is given. It is advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair where "body hair" covers all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases in drug result analysis within a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial incorporation into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any pertinent data input not available from an e-chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary examination for drug abuse. Despite being a financially efficient strategy for most samples, a positive screening necessitates validation for courtroom reliability. Any samples scoring presumptively positive during Screening undergo secondary verification.

Should a sample result as presumptively positive during the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and readied for Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than found in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), accentuating the complexity of hair drug analysis.

The verification of any affirmative screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to verification as required. The entire lab protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen incorporating both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation prerequisites.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing offers a detection timeframe extending to 90 days, unlike urine tests known for their shorter range.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug assessments are notoriously difficult to cheat on, enhancing the credibility of results.
  • Offers usage history: These tests can exhibit a pattern of drug consumption over an extended phase, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of pinpointing recent use: Drugs appear in hair only after around 5-7 days of consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Differences such as hair pigmentation and personal hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests," the method examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Mount Carmel, OH, hair follicle testing is a superior alternative to traditional urine tests. One key advantage is its enhanced detection accuracy, making it a preferred choice for many. This testing method provides a more comprehensive evaluation of drug use over time, whereas urine tests are limited to short detection windows. Hair tests also reduce the risk of sample tampering, ensuring more trustworthy outcomes in substance assessments.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Mount Carmel, OH, offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days. This makes it invaluable for employers looking to review a potential or current employee's history of substance use thoroughly. Whereas traditional tests cover shorter periods, hair testing provides a broader insight into patterns of use, giving a fuller picture of an individual's drug history and supporting informed decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
