In Mulberry, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our organization is adept in conducting hair drug and alcohol tests with a network of testing locations nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp are required, though body hair can be used. Our hair testing services can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various other substances.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common for substance detection. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair tests over standard urine tests. This method appeals to organizations with strict no-drug policies, the court system, and individuals under probation due to its longer detection period, typically up to 90 days, and the difficulty in manipulating results. However, urine tests remain the preferred option for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding markers in the fibers of the strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair may reveal up to about a 3-month window of detection for substances and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (roughly the dimension of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which constitutes the perfect quantity for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair are specific to scalp hair, while body hair pertains to other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedural steps in lab analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This entails checking the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling any missing data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is economical for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive indication requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that test positive in Screening necessitate further validation.

When a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drug extraction occurs at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting why hair drug testing is considered the most challenging methodology.

The Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with initial positive results are cleansed as required before confirmation. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards in addition to accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify substance use extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Deceptively altering a hair drug test is extremely challenging, yielding more precise results.
  • Reveals usage history: It can illustrate a user's drug consumption pattern over time, rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Fails to detect recent consumption: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
