Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Murdock, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these services, with centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests are capable of identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized for various testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common practice. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over the traditional urine method. Hair tests are ideal for employers enforcing strict drug use policies and are used by courts and those on probation. The main benefit is the extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process that's hard to tamper with. For detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still offer the highest precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has been recognized as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month surveillance window for detecting alcohol and drug presence. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, an optimal sample size for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair not be available, a proportional amount of body hair can be gathered. In discussing head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the lab involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is introduced into the lab's system. This phase ensures that the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and does any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a swift initial assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening offers a budget-friendly way to eliminate drug presence in most samples, any positive result requires verification for court acceptance. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positive results during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations from hair compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected to be positive are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter duration of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: It's exceedingly challenging to falsify hair drug tests, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides historical insight: It presents a timeline of substance use over a span of time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Murdock, OH: Hair testing surpasses traditional urine testing due to its superior detection period and accuracy. Unlike urine tests, which detect recent use, hair tests offer a broader history snapshot, identifying use over several months. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
