Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Nankin, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing. We maintain testing centers across all U.S. cities, capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is required. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored hair testing possibilities.

In recent times, the hair follicle drug test has increasingly become a common method for conducting drug testing. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer a hair test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests suit employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationers alike. The main advantage of a hair test lies in its extended detection span for drug use, often reaching up to 90 days, with results gathered through a supervised collection method, making it exceptionally hard to manipulate. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests still provide the most precise results.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair offers a detection interval of about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A specimen measuring 1.5 inches in length with approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for assessment and verification. For tests concerning EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10-panel screenings, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If there's no scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to hair from the scalp. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Summary

The processing of a drug test result at the laboratory entails four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an expedited check for substances of abuse. It's a cost-effective way to eliminate drug use on most samples, yet a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in court. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require additional verification.

For samples with a presumptive positive result at the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Any positive result in Screening is verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair requirements and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection interval: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, making results more reliable.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can reveal a history of drug usage over a span of time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Caution: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
