Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in New Bloomington, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist in hair analysis. We operate testing centers across all cities nationwide, capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

The last few years have seen hair follicle drug testing become more prevalent for drug screening. It’s now common for employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals to opt for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies and those overseeing probation. Their major advantage lies in their extended detection window of up to 90 days, observable collection process, and their resilience against tampering. However, urine tests remain the preferred choice for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance history by encasing biomarkers within its growing fibers. When snipped near the scalp, it can reveal consumption details spanning up to a three-month window for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar to a #2 pencil’s thickness) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or assessments over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We propose weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, the same quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial phase where a sample is integrated into a laboratory's system. This phase ensures the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any required data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening demand an additional confirmation.

In the event a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a markedly reduced concentration compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), emphasizing the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirming any positive screening outcome is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing identifies drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine testing has a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Test resistance: Manipulating a hair drug test is arduous, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Historical insights: It presents a usage pattern over a time span, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to indicate recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result disparities: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly mislabeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In New Bloomington, OH, hair follicle testing proves superior to urine tests, offering better detection accuracy. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests detect drug use reliably over an extended duration. This precise method gives employers and authorities confidence in results, outshining other testing methods in both dependability and depth of detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
