Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in New Burlington, Ohio. Whether you're seeking drug or alcohol testing via hair analysis, we specialize in this area with a network of testing centers across all major cities in the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body may be used for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other purposes.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has surged, often replacing the traditional urine test. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer hair tests. This demand is largely due to the extensive detection period of up to 90 days, rigorous observation protocol during collection, and the difficulty in tampering with results. Meanwhile, urine tests remain superior for identifying recent usage within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and diverse drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When hair is sourced near the scalp, it can offer up to roughly a 90-day detection span for alcohol and other drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for scrutiny and verification. For E.tG, extras, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When referencing head hair, the indication is towards scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab examination of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s system, which includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial, swift evaluation for drug usage. Although Screening economically excludes drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

The Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash pre-confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a more limited detection span.
  • Challenging to tamper with: It is remarkably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides a pattern of use: It supplies a pattern of drug use across a timeframe, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests generally entail higher costs than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in New Burlington, OH, offers advantages over traditional urine tests, boasting superior detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
